Phase and care: Gentle enough for most people in Phase 1 and Phase 2. This is a sweet-warm spice mix, no chilli, no pepper. Cardamom is optional, since strong aromatics are personal. Not medical advice.
Plain oatmeal keeps a lot of us alive in the early days, and plain oatmeal is also, let us be honest, dull by day four. This little jar is how I make the same safe breakfast feel like a treat without reaching for sugary shop toppings full of things I do not want.
Ingredients
Makes: about 5 tablespoons · about 5 kcal a teaspoon, no fat to speak of
- 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom (optional)
- optional, if you like it sweeter: 1 teaspoon vanilla powder
Method
- Mix everything in a small bowl.
- Keep it in a dry jar away from light. Shake before use, since the finer spices settle.
- Sprinkle about a quarter to half a teaspoon over warm oatmeal, plain low-fat yogurt, a bowl of rice pudding, or sliced banana.
It leans on the natural sweetness of the food, so you often need very little added honey or none at all.
Why make your own instead of buying a “cinnamon sugar” jar: the shop versions are mostly sugar, and some carry flavourings and anti-caking agents I would rather skip. This is just spices, and you control it.
Stepan’s Rule: Fix boring before you fix bland. A warm sprinkle turns the same safe breakfast into something you actually look forward to, without a sugar hit.
