Can I drink coffee with pancreatitis? Phase 1 on my sheet, against advice. Black is 0 g, a latte about 9 g.

Can I drink coffee with pancreatitis?

I drank coffee in Phase 1. The standard advice says wait until you’re pain-free, and my sheet has an honest note next to coffee: “not supposed to but still did it.”

So this page is me being upfront, and you deciding for yourself with your team.

The fat math

Black coffee is 0 g of fat. The budget problem starts with what goes in the cup.

A splash of 1.5% milk, maybe 30 ml, is about 0.5 g. A cappuccino on whole milk is around 5 g. A big latte with 250 ml of whole milk lands near 8 or 9 g, which is a third of a strict day (20 to 30 g a day while I’m strict, 40 to 50 g once things have settled). Oat and soy drinks vary wildly, so read the label.

Fat is one question with coffee. The acid and the caffeine are the other: both hit the stomach, and an irritated gut next to an irritated pancreas is a bad combination. I can’t tell you coffee caused any of my flare-ups. I also can’t prove it didn’t.

Which phase

On my sheet: Phase 1, against advice. Decaf I’ve never used, so I can’t rate it.

If you’re still in pain, I’d wait. That’s not what I did, and I’m aware of the contradiction.

How I actually drink it

1 cup, in the morning, after breakfast. Never on an empty stomach. A small splash of 1.5% milk, no sugar.

The second cup is the first thing I cut when my gut complains. Most weeks I don’t get to it.

Questions people ask me

Does coffee cause pancreatitis flare-ups?

I can’t say it did for me, and I can’t prove it didn’t. Coffee carries 0 g of fat but the acid and caffeine can bother an already irritated gut. I keep it to 1 cup after food.

Can I put milk in my coffee with pancreatitis?

A splash of 1.5% milk is about 0.5 g of fat, no problem. A latte with 250 ml of whole milk is about 8 or 9 g, a third of a strict day’s budget.

Is decaf coffee better for pancreatitis?

I don’t drink decaf, so I can’t rate it from experience. It removes most of the caffeine but keeps the acid, which is the other half of the problem.
