Can I eat bananas with pancreatitis? Phase 1. About 0.4 g of fat, and my bad-day meal more than once.

Can I eat bananas with pancreatitis?

Yes, and early. Bananas were among the first fruits I ate again in Phase 1, together with peeled apple and mandarins.

If you’re looking for a fruit that’s soft and almost free on the fat budget, this is it.

The fat math

A medium banana has about 0.4 g of fat. You could eat 10 and still have a strict day’s budget (20 to 30 g a day while I’m strict, 40 to 50 g once things have settled) untouched. You’d have other problems, but fat wouldn’t be one of them.

The trap is banana bread. A slice from a café runs about 8 to 12 g, all from the butter or oil in the batter. Different food.

Which phase

Phase 1 on my sheet, no notes. Ripe ones, with brown spots, sit better with me than green ones. The green starch can bloat an irritated gut.

As always: personal. Try it, and keep your team in the loop.

How I actually eat them

Sliced on oats with cinnamon. Mashed into low-fat yogurt. And as the base of every smoothie I make (smoothies are Phase 1 for me too): 1 banana, a handful of spinach, low-fat milk, done.

On a bad day a banana and a cup of herbal tea is sometimes the whole meal.

Questions people ask me

Can I eat a banana during a pancreatitis flare?

I did. Bananas are soft and carry about 0.4 g of fat, so on a bad day a ripe banana was often my whole meal. Check with your team if you’re still in acute pain.

Ripe or green bananas with pancreatitis?

Ripe, with brown spots. The starch in green bananas bloats my gut. Ripe ones digest easily and taste sweeter, so I need no honey on top.

Is banana bread OK with pancreatitis?

A café slice is about 8 to 12 g of fat from the butter or oil in the batter. The banana itself is innocent. I count banana bread as a Phase 2 treat, portioned.
