Phase & care: P1. Apple juice and cinnamon are both fine early. Cloves are not on my personal yes/no list, so I treat them as phase 2 and optional. Tolerances vary per person.
The first cold evening after my second attack, everyone around me had something warm and spiced in a mug and I had tap water. This is what I make now. It smells like the thing I’m missing, which turns out to be most of the point.
Ingredients
Makes: 2 mugs · about 130 kcal a mug, no fat
- 500 ml (2 cups) clear apple juice, no added sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick, or 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 thin slices of peeled apple
- 1 strip of lemon zest, no white pith
- 1 tsp (5 ml) honey, optional
- 2 cloves, optional and phase 2 only
Method
- Put the juice, cinnamon, apple slices and lemon zest in a small pan.
- Heat gently until it steams. Do not boil, or the apple flavour goes flat and dull.
- Hold it just below a simmer for 8 minutes so the spice comes through.
- Taste. Add honey only if the juice was tart.
- Strain into mugs. Drop a soft apple slice into each one.
Fat: essentially zero. Apple juice and spices carry no meaningful fat.
Notes from my kitchen
Cloudy apple juice tastes better here than clear, but it settled less well on me in the early weeks, so I use clear in phase 1 and cloudy later.
A splash of hot water at the end makes it gentler if the juice tastes too concentrated.
It reheats fine. I make a full pan on a Sunday and warm a mug at a time.
Stepan’s Rule: replace the ritual, not just the drink. Same mug, same chair, same time of evening. The habit is doing more work than the liquid is.
Not medical advice. I’m a patient sharing what works in my own kitchen.
