A tall empty glass with ice, sparkling water, a halved lime and a bunch of mint

The mocktail-hour survival kit

For us, alcohol is zero, not less, zero. That part is not negotiable and you already know it. The hard part was never the rule, it was the social weight of being the only person at the table with nothing nice to hold. Here is the thing that changed for me: the rest of the world caught up. The sober-curious movement means alcohol-free is now normal, often stylish, and the shelves are full of options. You just need a small kit ready so you are never caught out.

Stock these and you can build a proper drink anywhere.

Sparkling or still water, always. It is the base of nearly every good mocktail and it makes anything feel like an occasion. Keep bottles cold.

Fresh citrus. Lemons and limes do more for a drink than anything else in the kit. A squeeze of lime turns plain soda into something deliberate.

A jar of ginger syrup. Make it once (see the ginger sparkler recipe) and keep it in the fridge. It is your shortcut from “water” to “real drink” in seconds.

Hibiscus or fruit teas. Brewed strong and chilled, they give you colour and a grown-up tartness for the nights when water in a glass feels too plain.

100% fruit juices, used small. Pomegranate, cranberry, a splash of apple. Used as an accent, not the whole glass, they add depth without much sugar. (One heads-up: pomegranate juice can interact with some medicines like warfarin and certain statins, so if that is you, lean on cranberry or apple instead.)

Nice glasses and a garnish. This sounds trivial. It is not. Half of feeling normal at a party is holding something that looks like everyone else’s. A wine glass, a sprig of mint, a lime wheel. The drink does the social work for you.

Now the one that needs saying plainly. Watch the “alcohol-free” label. In many countries a drink labelled “alcohol-free” or “low alcohol” can still contain up to 0.5 percent alcohol, and “de-alcoholised” wines and beers often do. For us that is the wrong direction, both because of the alcohol itself and because the taste and ritual can be a trigger if drinking was part of your story. If you want a beer-style or wine-style drink, look specifically for “0.0 percent,” and even then decide honestly whether it helps you or tempts you. When in doubt, stick to the mocktails above, which carry zero risk on both counts.

Stepan’s Rule: Bring your own when you go out. Take a bottle of something good to the dinner or the party. Then you are never at the mercy of a host who only stocked wine and tap water.

What you gain is not just avoiding alcohol. Better sleep, steadier mood, no next-day fog, and a pancreas that is not under attack. The sober-curious crowd is choosing this for wellness. You are choosing it for your health, and you get all the same upsides.

Patient experience, not medical advice. For anyone managing alcohol dependence, please lean on proper support, not willpower alone.
