Phase and care: Phase 2, once you are settled and tolerating warm spices. Turmeric and ginger are gentle for most people but tolerance is personal, so start with a small cup. Not medical advice.
If you still have your gallbladder and it has stones: turmeric makes the gallbladder squeeze, and a small study found the effect grows with the dose. Ask your doctor before this becomes a daily habit, and before you take any turmeric or curcumin capsules. Half a teaspoon in a mug is a kitchen amount, not a supplement dose, but a stone on the move is how a lot of us ended up in hospital.
I wanted the cozy, cafe-style golden latte without the heavy coconut cream and, importantly, without the black pepper that recipes always tell you to add. Black pepper is a hard no for me and for a lot of us, so this version skips it and still tastes warm and round.

- 1 teaspoon honey, or to taste
- a tiny pinch of ground nutmeg (optional)
Method
- Warm the milk gently in a small pan until it steams. Do not let it boil.
- Whisk in the turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg so nothing clumps.

- Take the pan off the heat and stir in the honey.
- If you used fresh ginger, lift the slice out, then pour.

A note on the missing pepper: the internet insists you need black pepper to absorb turmeric. You do not need it to enjoy this drink, and if pepper is off your list, leave it out with a clear conscience. The point here is a calm, warm cup, not a supplement.
Stepan’s Rule: Warm, not boiling, and skip the black pepper. A golden latte should soothe you, not set your gut off.
